Hospitals have been at the forefront of COVID-19 media coverage, but you may not have heard about one particular type—hospitals for animals. Uncertainty abounds Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 1 in 5 households have adopted a new pet, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. High Point University sophomore Katie McDuffie adopted a cat during the pandemic to help with anxiety. To McDuffie, her cat has been incredibly important to pandemic isolation. “It’s nice having something to talk to,” said McDuffie. An uptick in adopted pets since the start of the pandemic led to a rise in animals needing hospital visits, however, placing greater strain on hospital staff already struggling to adjust to COVID regulations. HPU senior Steven Boan has been working at Banfield Pet Hospital since 2021.
